What fits a BMW 3 Series (E46, 1999-2006), and what goes wrong with it?
As of 2026-10-26, ChassisDex has 25 fitment answers, 8 known problems and 8 build entries for this car, each linked to its sources and rated with a confidence tier. Generation basics first, then every entry.
| Years | 1999-2006 |
|---|---|
| Trims | US sedans: 323i and 328i (1999-2000), then 325i and 330i; coupes 325Ci / 330Ci; convertibles; 325xi wagon. All-wheel-drive xi models (325xi, 330xi, 325xi wagon) arrived for 2001. The 330i Performance Package (ZHP, US only) entered production in March 2003. The M3 (S54 engine) came as coupe and convertible from 2001. |
| Engine | Non-M cars use BMW six-cylinders with double VANOS (M52TU and M54 families per Beisan). The ZHP 330i makes 235 hp with a six-speed manual and shorter final drive. The M3 uses the S54B32. |
| Notes | Wheels: 5x120 bolt pattern, 72.6 mm hub bore, M12x1.5 wheel bolts with a 60-degree cone seat, 120 N·m (about 89 ft-lb), per wheel guides and a torque table said to come from BMW service data. No BMW document read states these, so wheel rows stay at tier 2. Factory sizes from BMW's 2004 sedan brochure: 325i/325xi 16x7 with 205/55R16; 330i/330xi 17x7 with 205/50R17; Sport Package 17x8 with 225/45R17; optional staggered Style 68M 17x7.5 / 17x8.5 with 225/45R17 / 245/40R17; ZHP Style 135M 18x8 / 18x8.5 with 225/40R18 / 255/35R18. The M3 is staggered from the factory: 18x8 front / 18x9 rear with 225/45ZR18 / 255/40ZR18 and no spare. Offsets are not in BMW's documents; wheel libraries give ET47 / ET26 for the M3 and ET47 / ET50 for the ZHP. Brakes (vented discs): 325i 300 mm front / about 294 mm rear; 330i 325 mm front / 320 mm rear; the M3 uses thicker fronts (28 mm vs 22 mm) and 328 mm rears. Coupe, convertible and wagon wheel lists and years other than 2004 were not confirmed from a BMW source. |

Wheel and hub specs
| Bolt pattern | 5x120 |
|---|---|
| Hub (center) bore | 72.6 mm |
| Lug thread | M12x1.5 bolts (60-degree cone seat) |
| Factory wheel sizes |
|
| Note | Offsets come from wheel libraries, not BMW. One wheel guide lists the ZHP as 17x8/9 ET47/ET26, which matches the M3's Style 67 offsets rather than BMW's 18-inch ZHP spec; we follow BMW. 330i brakes are larger than the 325i's, so small wheels that clear a 325i may not clear a 330i (not tested in any source read). |
