Miata hardtop fitment (NA 1990-97, NB 1999-2005): what fits, latches, seals and OEM vs aftermarket
Short answer: Yes, NA and NB factory hardtops fit both generations: Mazda used the same basic shell from 1990 to 2005. What does not always match is the hardware. A 1992-97 NA top needs an NB-style defroster pigtail on an NB (and an NB top needs the NA-style one on an NA); cars built from November 1, 2002 use redesigned front latches and strikers, so the top's front latches must match the car's side of that split; and cars that never had a hardtop may need side strikers and rear deck bolts. NC hardtops do not fit. Most owners recommend a used Mazda top over aftermarket ones.
Compatibility at a glance
| Top from | On a 1990-97 NA | On a 1999 to Oct-2002-built NB | On an NB built Nov 2002-2005 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1990-91 NA (no defroster or headliner) | Native | Fits; no heated glass | Needs late front latches |
| 1992-97 NA | Native | Needs NB defroster pigtail | NB pigtail + late front latches |
| 1999 to early-2003 NB | Fits; swap pigtail for heated glass | Native | Needs late front latches |
| Late-2003 to 2005 NB | Needs early front latches + pigtail swap | Needs early front latches | Native |
| Aftermarket (most) | Fits (old latches, NA plug) | Fits; NB pigtail for heated glass | Needs late front latches |
Built from the Miata.net hardtop FAQ and a Miata parts specialist's NA/NB compatibility guide, cross-checked against an NB hardtop buyer's guide. Any pairing may still need side strikers and rear deck bolts if the car never had a hardtop.
The four things that decide whether a top is plug and play
- Front latches vs. the car's build date. The November 2002 latch and striker change is the one that catches late NB owners. Latches are swappable, so a top from the "wrong" side is fixable, not a no-fit.
- Defroster pigtail. 1992-97 NA tops use an NA plug; NB cars use a different connector. Early and late NB tops share a plug. 1990-91 tops have no heated glass at all.
- Side strikers and rear deck bolts. They live on the car, and cars that never wore a hardtop often lack them. Count them before you buy.
- Rear L-brackets and seals. NB tops have longer L-brackets (the NB soft top folds further forward). Seals are mostly shared, with a small B-pillar difference reported by an owner.
OEM vs aftermarket
A factory Mazda top has a glass rear window, and from 1992 on a headliner and heated glass. It is the heaviest option (about 40-50 lb) and good ones are scarce. Aftermarket replicas fit the same shape but usually come with early-style latches and an NA plug; owner feedback collected by Miata.net is mixed. Lightweight fiberglass or carbon race tops are a different product: very light, often sold as a bare shell, and frequently without headliner or glass. For a car that sees winter, most owners pick a factory top.
Before you buy a used top
- Ask which car the top came from and read the build month on your own door-jamb label.
- Get photos of all four latches, both L-brackets, the defroster pigtail and the rear glass.
- Check for cracks around latch mounts and the rear edge, a hard or shrunken window seal and broken defroster lines.
- Price in what is missing: latches, pigtail, side strikers, deck bolts, seals and paint. A cheap top with nothing attached can cost as much as a complete one.
If your soft top leaks instead, see NB soft-top water leaks and NA rust and clogged drains.

FAQ
Will an NA Miata hardtop fit an NB?
Yes. The shell is the same shape. For a 1992-97 top with a heated rear window you need an NB-style defroster pigtail (the Miata.net FAQ gives Mazda part NC11-67-060A), and on a car built from November 2002 on you need late-style front latches. The rear L-brackets on NA tops are shorter, so check they still press on a folded NB soft top.
Will an NB hardtop fit an NA Miata?
Yes, it is listed as a direct fit, but swap the defroster pigtail to use the heated glass, and if the top came from a car built from November 2002 on, fit 1990-2002 style front latches so they match the NA's strikers.
What changed on the 2003 Miata hardtop latches?
Mazda redesigned the front latches and the strikers on the windshield header for cars built from November 1, 2002, part way through the 2003 model year. Early-2003 cars built before that date have the old style. Check the build month on the driver's door-jamb label, not the model year.
What hardware does a car need to mount a factory hardtop?
Two front latches (on the top) that match the windshield strikers, two side latches on the top plus two side strikers on the car behind the doors, two rear deck bolts the back of the top slides onto, sound weatherstrips, and a defroster pigtail that matches the car. Side strikers bolt through the trim panel into nuts already welded into the body.
Are aftermarket Miata hardtops worth it?
They should fit any NA or NB, but most use old-style latches and an NA-style defroster plug, owner feedback on several brands has been mixed, and they are often not much cheaper than a used Mazda top. Lightweight fiberglass race tops save a lot of weight but often ship without window, brackets or seals.
How heavy is a factory Miata hardtop?
Roughly 40 to 50 lb depending on year, per figures attributed to the Miata.net FAQ. It is a two-person lift for most people.
Are NA and NB hardtop weatherstrips the same?
Mostly, but one owner found the B-pillar corner seal differs: NA seals left a gap (wind noise, some water) on an NB, and NB-specific seals closed it. Side-window and rear-deck seal sets are sold for all 1990-2005 tops.
Does an NC hardtop fit an NA or NB?
No. The NC is a larger, different body, and listings that say a top fits all Miatas normally mean NA and NB only.
