Mazda Miata NB1 (1999-2000) vs NB2 (2001-2005): what changed and what interchanges

Published · Updated

What is the difference between an NB1 and an NB2 Miata?

Short answer: NB1 means the 1999-2000 US model years and NB2 the 2001-2005 facelift. The NB2 got a variable valve timing (VVT) head and tubular exhaust manifold, a new front bumper and two-bulb headlights, new gauges and taller seatbacks, and larger Sport brakes on some trims (all cars from 2003). Many parts swap between them, but NB2 seatbelts and ECUs do not fit an NB1, and the VVT engine needs wiring work. Read the build date, not just the model year: the hardtop latches changed in November 2002.

Which years are NB1 and NB2?

In the US, 1999 and 2000 model-year cars are NB1, and 2001 through 2005 are NB2. Road & Track describes the later car as getting styling updates, proper variable valve timing and a tubular header, and an enhanced Sport package with larger brakes, 16-inch alloys and some chassis stiffening.

Some changes happened inside the NB2 run, so 2001 and 2005 cars are not identical. The 6-speed manual, a special-edition item in 1999-2000, became a regular option for 2001. Road & Track says 2003-on cars use a Tochigi Fuji limited slip instead of the Torsen, and a used-parts dealer notes 2003-05 cars added LATCH child-seat anchors behind the passenger seat. Mazda changed the hardtop front latches and windshield-header strikers on cars built from November 1, 2002, part way through the 2003 model year, so check the build month on the door-jamb label. The 2004-05 Mazdaspeed MX-5 is its own case: turbocharged, with a non-VVT head, 17x7 wheels and larger anti-roll bars.

Engine and electronics

Redline Auto Parts, a used Miata parts dealer that writes from hands-on checks, says the main engine differences are in the cylinder head. It lists the NB2 with 10.0:1 compression against 9.5:1 for the NB1, a higher-flow oil pump, higher-flow injectors and an 80-amp alternator instead of 70 amps. The bare block, crank and rods are listed as the same, and the pistons as interchangeable.

The ignition changed too. The NB1 uses coil packs, which owners report wearing out; the NB2 uses a different coil setup that the dealer lists as not fitting an NB1 head unless the Mazdaspeed valve cover is used. The NB2 ECU has an immobilizer and different wiring, and its mass airflow sensor is a different calibration, so neither goes into an NB1.

A whole NB2 engine can go into an NB1, the dealer says, if you keep the NB1 accessories, throttle body and engine harness, add the NB2 coil connectors and move the cam-sensor plug to the back of the head. With the NB1 ECU you leave the VVT solenoid unplugged and run fixed timing; to gain from VVT you need an aftermarket ECU or VVT controller. This is a single dealer source (tier 2).

Body, lights and interior

The NB2 front bumper and headlights only fit as a pair, and the headlights need rewiring because the NB1 uses one bulb for low and high beam while the NB2 uses two. NB2 fog lights and the NB2 or Mazdaspeed front lip do not fit an NB1 bumper. The dealer lists fenders, hood, mirrors, rear bumper and trunk lid as direct fits, and NB2 taillights as fitting with the small NB2 taillight harnesses.

Inside, the dealer lists NB2 seats as a direct fit in an NB1 (Mazdaspeed seats fit any NB), but NB2 seatbelts as not compatible, because their pyrotechnic pretensioners need wiring the NB1 lacks. Seatbelts are safety-critical: use the belts specified for your car. The NB2 gauge cluster has white faces and red backlighting and needs rewiring and the odometer question sorted to go into an NB1; door panels and the driver's auto-down window switch also differ. Road & Track adds that the later cars' seatbacks are taller, which helps taller drivers.

Brakes, wheels and drivetrain

From 2001 Mazda offered larger Sport brakes, standard on all 2003-05 cars. The dealer lists them on 2001-02 LS and Special Edition cars; other sources tie them to the 2001-02 Sport package, so for a 2001-02 car check the front rotor size (255 mm standard against 270 mm Sport) rather than the trim name. The Sport brakes fit an NB1 if you move the calipers, larger brackets, rotors, pads and front lines and trim the dust shields; a forum owner who did it says expect a longer pedal unless the master cylinder is changed. These are dealer and forum reports on a safety-critical part (tier 2).

Wheels: every NB is 4x100 with a 54.1 mm hub, so NB1 and NB2 wheels swap. The limit is brake clearance: 14-inch wheels, factory or NA, do not clear the Sport brakes, while they clear NB1 and base NB2 brakes. Sport/SE cars from 2001 and all 2004-05 cars came on 16x6.5 +40, and the Mazdaspeed on 17x7 +40 with 205/40R17.

Drivetrain: the 5-speed and 6-speed both bolt into any NB, but bring the shifter from the donor car, because the dealer says only early-2001 6-speed shifters match the NB1 unit. Non-Mazdaspeed 1994-2005 rear ends interchange; the Mazdaspeed Torsen only works with its own larger axles. Sources disagree on 6-speed final drive ratios in the last years, so read the tag on the differential.

Known problems by half

NB1 (1999-2000): Road & Track and a second source report thrust-bearing failure in a few cars (listen for a rattle with the clutch pedal down or when revving); a forum problem list and a year-by-year page say the coil packs wear out and can hurt the catalytic converter; and forum owners report the small front coolant elbow corroding (single-thread level, tier 1). Some 1999 cars also have two recalls, for injector wiring and the fuel filler valve.

NB2 (2001-2005): Road & Track reports clutch chatter on 2001 and some 2002 cars, fixed only by a new clutch, and NHTSA lists a recall for loose fog light bulb holders on 2001-03 cars. Everything else on the NB problem list, such as rust, oil leaks, soft-top drains and radiator end tanks, applies to both halves; see the Miata buyer's checklist.

Which should you buy?

It depends on what you want. An NB2 has the VVT engine, the newer interior and (on most cars) the Sport brakes, and avoids the NB1 coil-pack and thrust-bearing reports. An NB1 has simpler electronics with no immobilizer and is the half that takes the Mazdaspeed intake cam as a direct-fit upgrade (it does not fit the VVT engine). Condition and history matter more than the half: Road & Track's advice is to prefer the car with the service records.

FAQ

What years are NB2 Miatas?

In the US, 2001 through 2005 model years. The 1999-2000 cars are NB1. The 2004-05 Mazdaspeed MX-5 is an NB2-era car with its own turbo engine and non-VVT head.

Is a 2002 Miata an NB1 or NB2?

An NB2. It has the VVT engine and facelifted front end. Whether it has the larger Sport brakes depends on trim, so check the front rotor size (270 mm Sport, 255 mm standard).

Can I put NB2 headlights on an NB1?

Only together with the NB2 front bumper, and the wiring needs changing because the NB1 uses one bulb for low and high beam and the NB2 uses two. NB2 fog lights do not fit an NB1 bumper.

Do NB2 seats fit an NB1?

A used-parts dealer lists NB2 seats as a direct fit in an NB1, and Mazdaspeed seats in any 1999-2005 NB. NB2 seatbelts are listed as not compatible because of their pretensioners.

Do NB1 and NB2 wheels interchange?

Yes, every NB uses 4x100 with a 54.1 mm hub. The catch is brakes: 14-inch wheels do not clear the larger Sport brakes on some 2001-02 cars and all 2003-05 cars.
