Cooling system plastics fail with age (expansion tank, pump, radiator)
Added · Updated
What causes "Cooling system plastics fail with age (expansion tank, pump, radiator)" on the BMW 3 Series (E46, 1999-2006), and how is it fixed?
Many cooling parts are plastic. Fix: Inspect the tank at every oil change.
Symptoms
Coolant loss, a low-coolant warning, a cracked expansion tank or radiator neck, and in the worst case overheating.
Cause
Many cooling parts are plastic. The expansion tank turns brittle and develops hairline cracks, and the system is nearly the same on all 1999-2006 E46s.
Fix (summary)
Inspect the tank at every oil change. Plan a cooling overhaul (pump, thermostat, radiator, tank, cap and hoses) around 100,000 miles, or sooner if parts are original. Stop driving if it overheats.
