Rear subframe mounts tearing out of the floor

Added · Updated

What causes "Rear subframe mounts tearing out of the floor" on the BMW 3 Series (E46, 1999-2006), and how is it fixed?

The floor at the subframe mounts is two layers, and the mount gussets are tack-welded only to the lower layer. Fix: Weld in reinforcement plates under the car and in the trunk, ideally at a professional shop, and replace worn subframe bushings.

Reported · Severity: High · Years: 1999-2006 (1999-2003 reported worse) · 3 sources · Last verified 2026-10-26

Symptoms

Clunks from the rear under throttle or braking and vague rear handling. Cracks show in the floor around the rear subframe mounts, most often on the left rear.

Cause

The floor at the subframe mounts is two layers, and the mount gussets are tack-welded only to the lower layer. Load from the cross member is pushed to the left rear mount, which tears loose. One shop says 1999-2003 cars are worse because they have fewer spot welds, and that it is mainly a non-M problem.

Fix (summary)

Weld in reinforcement plates under the car and in the trunk, ideally at a professional shop, and replace worn subframe bushings. One vendor says BMW's official fix was structural foam injection; we have no BMW document for it. Align the car afterward.
