Double VANOS seals harden: low-end torque loss and rough idle

Added · Updated

What causes "Double VANOS seals harden: low-end torque loss and rough idle" on the BMW 3 Series (E46, 1999-2006), and how is it fixed?

The rubber O-rings under the VANOS piston seals harden and shrink, so the seals leak oil pressure. Fix: Reseal the VANOS unit with an aftermarket seal kit.

Reported · Severity: Medium · Years: 1999-2006 (non-M six-cylinders) · 2 sources · Last verified 2026-10-26

Symptoms

Weak torque below about 3,000 rpm, bogging or surging near 3,000 rpm, idle stumbles that get worse with the AC on, and higher fuel use. 2001-on M54 cars may log P1397.

Cause

The rubber O-rings under the VANOS piston seals harden and shrink, so the seals leak oil pressure. BMW does not sell the seals separately.
