Bearing knock and, in the worst case, total engine failure, mainly after sustained high rpm.

Cause

BMW's bulletin says bearings fitted to M3s built from Feb 2001 to May 2003 were not made to BMW's quality standards and can overheat. Some shops add that clearance is tight and wear continues after the recall; one shop blames long oil intervals more than factory defects.

Fix (summary)

BMW replaced the bearings and reprogrammed the engine computer, and extended the engine warranty to 6 years / 100,000 miles for 2001-2003 S54 cars; those terms have long expired. Many owners now replace rod bearings as maintenance.
