Early clutch hydraulic durability (restrictor valve added 2003)

Symptoms

Low or spongy pedal, hydraulic wear.

Cause

Grassroots says the 2003 model year added a restrictor valve to the clutch hydraulics for better durability. It does not say why or how common failures were. (A Subaru bulletin on clutch master cylinders exists but covers 2015-20 WRX, so it is not used here.)

Fix (summary)

Inspect and bleed the clutch hydraulics on a 2002 car; ask a Subaru specialist whether the updated parts apply.
