Rod-bearing wear on the 2.0L EJ205
Confirmed · Severity: High · Years: 2002-2005
Symptoms
Rod knock, low oil pressure; bearing wear can be silent until a bearing spins, often under full boost near redline.
Cause
Sources tie it to long oil-change intervals and cheap oil, and to the wide factory bearing-clearance tolerance. One shop reports it on stock, unmodified cars and says it is not caused by tuning. MotorTrend says the 2.5L engines see it less. Grassroots names the No. 2 rod bearing as a next-to-fail item.
Fix (summary)
Short oil intervals with quality synthetic, periodic oil analysis and oil-pressure monitoring; budget for engine work before heavy modification of a high-mileage car.
