← Subaru WRX (GD/GG, 2002-2007) problems
Cracked piston ring lands from detonation
Confirmed · Severity: High · Years: 2002-2007 (reported most often on 2.5L EJ255)
Symptoms
Oil consumption rising, blow-by/crankcase pressure, smoke, loss of compression.
Cause
Knock (detonation) hammers the thin ring land on the stock cast pistons. Sources list low-octane fuel, poor tuning, lean fueling and sustained hard driving as triggers; a tight ring gap is also mentioned as a contributor. One source notes the 2.5L is the more susceptible one; Grassroots says ring lands also go first on the 2.0L.
Fix (summary)
Prevention matters most: good fuel, conservative professionally-built tune, healthy cooling and intake. Once ring lands crack the short block needs rebuilding.
