Symptoms

None before a crash. In a crash, a ruptured inflator can throw metal fragments into the cabin.

Cause

Several recalls cover the Takata front passenger inflator: 2004-05 Imprezas built from early 2003 to mid 2005 (later NHTSA records say 2004-05 WRX cars had their inflators replaced under that earlier recall), 2006-07 Impreza (incl. WRX and STI), and a later round for 2004-on WRX and STI whose replacement inflators were the same design. One small campaign covers 2004-05 Impreza and WRX cars whose replacement may have been installed incorrectly. NHTSA lists no Takata campaign for 2002-03 Imprezas.

Fix (summary)

Run the VIN through NHTSA's lookup and have a Subaru dealer replace the passenger inflator if a remedy is open. A car may need more than one visit across campaigns.
