What fits a BMW 3 Series (E36, 1992-1999), and what goes wrong with it?
As of 2026-10-26, ChassisDex has 23 fitment answers, 11 known problems and 8 build entries for this car, each linked to its sources and rated with a confidence tier. Generation basics first, then every entry.
| Years | 1992-1999 |
|---|---|
| Trims | US models named in the sources read: 318i, 318is, 318ic, 325i, 325is and 325ic (NHTSA recall records for 1992-95); the 318ti hatchback, also called the Compact (recall records from 1995); 323is, 323ic, 328i, 328is and 328ic (1998 owner's manual); and the M3. One wheel retailer says the US M3 ran 1995-99 with 240 hp, a 3.0-liter engine in 1995 and a 3.2 from 1996. Sedan and convertible M3s were also sold, but sources disagree on their first US year. |
| Engine | The 318ti uses the M44 four-cylinder (BMW TIS model listing). A retailer lists the 328i/is/ic with the M52 six and the 1996-99 M3 with the S52. Engine codes for the other trims were not confirmed from a source read. |
| Notes | Wheels: 5x120 bolt pattern, 72.6 mm hub bore, M12x1.5 wheel bolts with a 60-degree cone seat, on every US E36 including the 318ti and M3. Wheel bolt torque: 120 ± 10 N·m per BMW's TIS torque table (issue 12/2007); note that the 1998 US owner's manual lists 100 N·m (72 lb-ft) and says to recheck after about 600 miles. Factory sizes from the 1998 owner's manual (318/323/328 only): 6Jx15 ET42 steel with 185/65R15 on the base 318i sedan; 205/60R15 or 225/55R15 on 6.5Jx15 steel or 7Jx15 alloy wheels at ET47; and 225/50ZR16 on 7Jx16 alloys at ET45/46. The manual says the larger sizes need modifications before they can be retrofitted. The 318ti uses an E30-type rear axle and, per one retailer, 185/65R15 on 15x6 ET42 for 1995. M3 wheels are all ET41: Style 22 17x7.5 square for 1995, then staggered Style 39 (17x7.5 / 17x8.5, 225/45R17 / 245/40R17) on 1996-99 coupes. Sources disagree on the 1995 Style 22 tire (235/40R17 vs 225/45R17). Brakes per BMW TIS: 286 mm front discs (M3 315 mm); rear discs 280 mm solid, 276 mm vented, 272 mm on the compact, 312 mm on the M3. |
