BMW 3 Series (E36, 1992-1999): Suspension mods
Added · Updated
What are the best suspension mods for the BMW 3 Series (E36, 1992-1999)?
It depends on the car’s condition and how you use it. These are the 3 suspension build entries we have sourced for this car: Refresh and reinforce the E36 rear shock mounts (Limited); Quicker steering: Z3 or E46 rack in an E36 (Limited); Offset front control arm bushings for more caster (Limited). Each lists caveats, related problems and sources so you can match it to your goal.
Refresh and reinforce the E36 rear shock mounts Limited
Swap worn rear mounts for the redesigned E46 M3 / convertible mount and add the Z3-era top support plate. Inspect the sheet metal first; torn towers need BMW's weld-in repair panels or a reinforcement kit.
Caveats: E36 and E46 rear shocks are not interchangeable; only the mount carries over. Single retailer source.
Related issues: Rear shock mounts crack and can tear the body
Parts: E46 M3 / E46 convertible rear shock mount (BMW 33526754096), Z3-era rear shock mount top support plate (BMW 51718413359), E36 rear shock tower weld-in repair panels (BMW 41148169027 L / 41148169028 R)

Quicker steering: Z3 or E46 rack in an E36 Limited
The Z3 rack (about 2.88 turns) is a direct swap. E46 racks such as the ZHP's (about 3.0 turns) need conversion inner tie rods and new boots. The standard E36 rack is about 3.33 turns; the E36 M3 rack is quicker only because of limiters.
Caveats: Steering is safety-critical; have the car aligned afterward. Turn counts are a rebuilder's figures.
Parts: BMW Z3 steering rack (about 2.88 turns lock to lock), E46 330i ZHP steering rack (about 3.0 turns lock to lock)

Offset front control arm bushings for more caster Limited
E30 M3-style offset bushings bolt into the same brackets on a non-M E36 and move the wheel forward for more caster. On 1996-99 M3s they are only worth it on a lowered car.
Caveats: Poly bushings need a set screw drilled into the bracket. Torque the retainer bolts to 47 N·m and align afterward.
Parts: Offset front control arm bushings (E30 M3 style) for a non-M E36
