E36 cooling overhaul: metal-impeller pump, tanks, thermostat and hoses Reported
Replace the water pump, thermostat and housing, radiator, expansion tank and hoses as a set, within about 80,000 miles or on any car with original parts. Choose a pump with a metal impeller and aluminum tanks or housings where available.
Caveats: Interval and part choices come from vendors. On 1992-95 cars, also check that the 98V-178 radiator cap recall was done.
Related issues: Cooling system plastics fail with age (pump impeller, tanks, thermostat housing), Recall 98V-178: heater core end piece can split if the engine overheats
