Symptoms

Brake fluid seeping from rusted lines near the fuel tank; a longer stopping distance if it leaks.

Cause

NHTSA says salt water can splash onto the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector. 14V-311 covers 2008-14 Impreza WRX/STI registered in 20 salt-belt states and DC; 14V-830 added wax at the four-way joint for cars already fixed before December 23, 2014.

Fix (summary)

Dealers check for leaks, replace lines that seep, and apply anti-corrosion wax, free (14V-311 from July 2014; 14V-830 from January 27, 2015). Cars outside the listed states are repaired on request. Check the VIN, and inspect the lines on any salt-state car.
