Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII (2003-2005): Drivetrain mods

Added · Updated

What are the best drivetrain mods for the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII (2003-2005)?

It depends on the car’s condition and how you use it. These are the 2 drivetrain build entries we have sourced for this car: Rebuild a grinding 5-speed with new synchros (Limited); Change the transaxle, transfer and rear diff oils (Reported). Each lists caveats, related problems and sources so you can match it to your goal.

Rebuild a grinding 5-speed with new synchros Limited

A grinding Evo VIII/IX 5-speed usually needs synchro rings. One rebuilder uses bronze rings instead of the factory brass ones (triple-cone 1st-2nd, double-cone 3rd, single-cone 4th-5th).

Caveats: Single vendor source. The 6-speed MR gearbox is a different unit.

Related issues: 5-speed gearbox grinds as the brass synchro rings wear

Parts: OEM Evo VIII (2003-05 non-MR) 5-speed manual transaxle (W5M51)

Change the transaxle, transfer and rear diff oils Reported

Per the 2003 service manual: transaxle oil is GL-4 75W-85W or 75W-90 (2.8 L / 2.9 qt), and the transfer case takes GL-5 SAE 90 (0.55 L / 0.58 qt). The schedule includes rear axle oil changes for the limited-slip differential.

Caveats: Capacities and grades are from the 2003 manual (5-speed W5M51); the 6-speed and the 2005-06 ACD system were not covered by the sections read.
