Rear axle (spindle) nut torque: creak or pop and hub bearing wear
Added · Updated
What causes "Rear axle (spindle) nut torque: creak or pop and hub bearing wear" on the Honda S2000 (AP1, 2000-2003), and how is it fixed?
A reference site and an S2KI how-to say Honda raised the rear spindle nut torque from 181 to 220 lb-ft in a 2001 Service News article; a loose nut lets the inner bearing race move on the hub. Fix: Retorque the 36 mm rear nuts to the revised 220 lb-ft (298 N·m) and re-stake them.
Symptoms
A pop or creak from the rear; worn rear hubs or bearings if it goes on.

Fix (summary)
Retorque the 36 mm rear nuts to the revised 220 lb-ft (298 N·m) and re-stake them. The S2KI write-up goes a further 60 degrees; that is the community's method, not Honda's. The Honda article itself was not found.
