Soft-top water leaks: blocked drains, cracked rain rail, side windows and zipper

Q: What causes "Soft-top water leaks: blocked drains, cracked rain rail, side windows and zipper" on the Mazda Miata NA (1990-1997), and how is it fixed?

A: The soft top is not sealed. Fix: Clear both drains first: tilt the seats forward, unlatch the top and fold back the carpet flap behind each seatbelt tower, then feed something soft and flexible down the tube (a club article warns against damaging the flap valve at the bottom) and test with water.

Reported · Severity: Medium · Years: 1990-1997 (soft-top cars; same layout as the NB) · 4 sources · Last verified 2026-10-23

Symptoms

Water on the rear parcel shelf or behind the seats, damp or moldy carpet, water sloshing in the sills, drips at the front corners of the top or past the side-window seals.

Cause

The soft top is not sealed. Water running off it collects in a plastic rain rail along the base of the top and empties through a drain on each side, in the corner between the seatbelt tower and the body. When those drains clog, water overflows onto the shelf, and owners warn that moldy carpet usually means rusting metal underneath. On older cars the rain rail itself cracks and leaks onto the shelf near the rear window (replacement rails for 1990-2005 are sold). Side-window and windshield-header leaks come from shifted or dirty weatherstrips and latches that no longer pull the top down tight.

Fix (summary)

Clear both drains first: tilt the seats forward, unlatch the top and fold back the carpet flap behind each seatbelt tower, then feed something soft and flexible down the tube (a club article warns against damaging the flap valve at the bottom) and test with water. If water still reaches the shelf near the rear window, check the rain rail for cracks and replace it. For side-window drips, owners suggest closing the door after raising the window so the glass seats differently, and a little petroleum jelly where the rubber meets the glass; adjust or replace tired weatherstrips and latches. See the NA rust and drains entry for what trapped water does to the sills.
